Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keyfobs has broken off the little key loop on top where it attaches to the keyfob. It's believed to be made of very soft plastic or metal. I've punched a hole and wet-sanded it to strengthen it but I'm guessing the problem isn't helped by that.

I've also tried wrapping the broken the ring using clear tape, but it didn't work as good. It's a shame, because I use the little split ring to keep my keys in the right place.

If the case for the key fob itself is broken it is usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't already dead). There are online kits available, but they only provide a temporary solution. It's better to get it fixed by a mechanic. You may also be able to find the replacement case at an home improvement store or a locksmith. They're not likely to be as expensive as the new key fob.
